You will pay for less
- There will be a digital world, and there will be ads in it. You will probably have to pay to hide / not see them.
- Will there also be a visual "ad-blocker" / reality distorter that you can pay more for?
Levels
When we finally get decent enough AR glasses I think there will be a lot of new paradigms / social norms that arise.
One that jumps to mind is that this becomes a new surface for advertising, so there will be some immediate expansion and collapsing within that domain.
There will be some sort of rules around where you can place digital components in relation to the physical world, but this operates under the assumption that there will only be one surface everyone is fighting over, but unlike the physical, the digital can scale infinitely.
So there may emerge different "levels" that people can choose to operate on. You can operate within the free-tier base layer 1 and see advertisements, or you can upgrade to have an ad-free digital experience.
You could even upgrade further and have a digital ad-blocker that overlays real world advertisements to prevent you from seeing them.
See Visual walls.
Many layers
There could be many layers!
You could have private layers with friends where you can assign digital components.
People often think of digital pets, fashion, self expression, but there could be layers to this.
Honestly there could be some social class system where you can display some amount of information about yourself only to other people who are vetted and are on the same "layer" as you (eg only display my social media to people who are I.D vetted and paying for the pro-tier).
